Spectaculair results recumbents on Classique Genevoise June 22nd 2003 Switserland

June 22nd, 2003To the top
Spectaculair results recumbents on Classique Genevoise June 22nd 2003 SwitserlandOn a beautiful sunny day, in the Classique Genevoise, a race for amator-cyclists on a hilly track of 80 km in Geneva country, 400 cyclists of the Geneva area have been able to see how recumbents bikes can perform against regular racing bikes.

First five are all recumbent bikes. And first two ride M5 low-racers. The race track record has been exploded. Werner de Hamer on his M5 Carbon low-racer has let the first racing bike at 9 minutes… A huge gap on an event of less than 2 hours… And thus, despite the fact that recumbents had to fight pretty hard in the first lap, because they were forced to start at the end of the group, and so had to pass 400 cyclists first… On top of that, Werner de Hamer, and most of the other recumbent riders raced alone… So no benefit of the very important windshadow/pelloton effect. To understand this, you can notice that there is less gap between the first racing bike and the 37th racing bike than between Werner de Hamer on his Carbon low-racer and the first racing bike…

Seppe Hoogzaad finished second on his Chromo Low-racer and was still 4 minutes ahead of the first racing bike. Third is Thomas Schott on his Razz-Fazz, 4th Charles Henry on a Birk, and 5th and last recumbent before the first racing bike : Vincent Pfister on Optima Baron.

Comments with small pictures (from left to right)

  • The man that dominated the 3 hour race on Cycle Vision once again leading the race. The mounting roads seem to pose no threat for Werner.
  • Seppe Hoogezaad, also from he M5 team, in second position, several minutes before number three.
  • Werner de Hamer close to the finish, nine minutes before the first conventional racer. This should finish any debate on recumbent versus racing bike once and for all!
